Frequently Asked Questions | Post and Rail Fencing

Practical Function

Post & Rail fence systems mark boundaries and can be used to direct traffic. The open design lets you economically fence the perimeters of large or small areas. In rural regions, this fence style is typically used for containing livestock.

Decorative Functions

Post & Rail is a flexible and adaptable wood fencing system. It's a sensible choice when used for boundary markers, which designate property lines without obscuring the view. Cutting the rails in different lengths can accommodate tricky curves or changes in grade or terrain. Post & Rail fencing can appear rustic or formal depending on the style chosen. Either style can be used decoratively, and can be clean cut and painted if you prefer a very formal look.

Your local area will determine which species of wood are readily available. The primary species or groups of wood used in rail fencing are listed below.

Wood Types / Species

  • Western Red Cedar
  • Northern White Cedar
  • Treated

Wood Rail Types

Post & rail fencing consists of posts attached to round, square, board, or split rails. Post and rails are usually the same style, giving the fence a nice uniform look. An open design allows these fences to be used for animal containment without blocking a view. This design is excellent for perimeter fencing, because the rails flow with the terrain. Painting a post & rail fence can create a look of rural life and simple elegance. Topping the posts or using finials can add a touch of sophistication.

Post & Board Style

The post & board design is very similar to the post & rail, except the rails are boards that are attached to the sides of a square post, instead of mortised into the post. Post & board fencing is practical as well as an attractive variation. Closely spaced boards or the board-on-board design can keep small children and pets from getting through the fence. It is also a very popular for livestock and farming. The size of the boards and posts will depend on the fence use and design. Like post & rail fencing, this design will require less lumber than other fencing, and it adapts well to rolling terrain.

Round Style

Round post & rail fencing is a different approach to the classic post & rail style. This simple, natural design works well with most homes and commercial properties and as a background for landscaping. This strong and durable fencing system has precision inter-locking dowel construction. This provides a tight fit and easy construction with no hardware required. Some functional uses for round post & rail fencing are livestock containment and/or nursery stock.

Square Style

Another version of post & rail fencing features cleanly cut posts and rails, with rails attached being either squared, or turned for a diamond-shaped appearance. Painting this style can add a touch of simple elegance to the fence.

Split Rail Style

These simple rustic systems employ horizontal rails and posts, which are predrilled for lines, ends and corners. This timeless classic can be combined with mesh wire to provide an economical barrier. This open design gives you an unobstructed view through the fence.

Guard Post & Rail Style

The guard post & rail fencing style creates a structure that's uniform and consistent in configuration and quality. It provides an efficient, yet attractive barrier that gives protection to meet any applicable specification, including those for highway safety and parking perimeters. The guard post & rail is designed for easy construction, maintenance, and replacement. Quality pressure treatment protects the wood for long life and service.

Post & Board Variations

Many post & board fence designs feature decorative variations and embellishments that enhance their functional use while accenting their surroundings. The overall appearance of your fence will depend not only on its specific design, but on the materials chosen, the height, spacing and other dimensions you specify. These details and any other surrounding property characteristics, must work together to ensure a functional and attractive fencing system.
